About The AUTHOR

In 1994, following a period of emotional upheaval and notions of unfulfilled ambition, Karen Spence made a conscious decision to re-evaluate and reconstruct her life

Karen was 36 when she enrolled in a full-time University degree. This marked the beginning of five transformative years of breaking new ground, on a journey of personal growth and self-discovery. Whilst attending University she continued to support herself working 28-hour workweeks. She navigated the breakdown of her marriage and subsequent divorce, bought her own home and found love again with her husband Ivan. She graduated from university with Honours in 1997.

Karen and Ivan married in 1998 and faced new challenges. Efforts to conceive had failed and they endured the emotional roller-coaster of assisted fertility treatment, which was ultimately successful. In 1999, Karen was 41 years old when she and Ivan welcomed their daughter Rebecca.

She found herself once again wading through uncharted waters. This time as a middle-aged first-time Mum experiencing the physical, mental and emotional challenges of post-birth, combined with the equally challenging and conflicting symptoms of perimenopause.

Karen Spence’s journey is a testament to resilience, reinvention, and the power of pursuing life on your own terms, at any age.

Born in Manchester, UK, Karen grew up in a bustling household as the middle child of seven children. In 1975 at just 17 years old, Karen defied expectations and left secretarial college to enlist in the British Army where she enjoyed a rewarding   15-year career.

During the 15 years that followed she emigrated to New Zealand and later to Australia, where she worked for the government in each country.

In her mid-50s Karen elected early retirement to resurrect an earlier passion. Already a Health & Weight Loss Coach, Karen further qualified as a Group Fitness Trainer and Aqua-aerobics Instructor.  She created her own business to encourage and empower other middle-aged women to prioritise themselves and engage in meaningful self-care.

Now, with her first book, Karen dives into the unique challenges of the daily struggles associated with the stages of menopause and life beyond. She challenges her clients to step fearlessly into middle age, shattering outdated notions and proving that this time of life is just the beginning of new possibilities.

Her aim is to debunk societal myths surrounding middle age and offer insights for women who are ready to reclaim their identity and improve their health, purpose and standing in today’s society.  Her message is clear: this stage of life is a powerful one and full of potential – don’t waste it.

Karen’s passion is to help women look to their future with confidence and purpose, keeping self-care, health and fitness at the heart of their journey.
